FC Dallas trialists struggle to make roster
For most MLS players the scrimmages with college sides are for little more than getting their legs under them and working on tactics. The same cannot be said for the trialists in camp that are struggling to make the final roster. These scrimmages are vital.
For FC Dallas and their trialists, decision day is coming fast. Only a week remains until MLS clubs must have their rosters widdled down to size. Roster decisions are expected in advance of the team’s trip to the Disney Pro Soccer Classic on Friday.
Among those fighting for a roster spot are forwards Dogba and Scott Sealy, both of whom scored against the Tulsa defense. He notched two second half goals on Saturday, knows the pressure is on, but refuses to let it affect his game.
"It's over your head. Obviously you want to do well and get a contract, but you can't play like that – tentative and not wanting to make mistakes."
Players will have one final opportunity to shine on Wednesday, though possibly against their most challenging opponent yet. The team will take on the US U23s, who will travel to Frisco for a ten day training camp beginning Sunday. The young squad features MLS talents such as Juan Agudelo and Zarek Valentin in addition to a number of overseas players. FC Dallas will have to deal with a talented American midfielder by the name of Brek Shea.
"They're a good team - a lot of young, talented players from MLS and overseas," Sealy said. "They're going to be strong and fast, and have a lot of guys that are good with the ball technically. It's going to be a good game."
Ellinger is excited to see his squad match-up against the U23s, and particularly against Shea. But all eyes will be on those who fighting to remain with the squad as the preseason nears its’ end. After all, a big performance against elite talent might do wonders for those on the bubble.
“If a guy can step up and play well against a team like the U23s, that will go a long way in helping that individual,” Ellinger said. “It will be fresh in Schellas’ mind when making the decision.”
Sealy, however, will do anything but dwell on the possibility of leaving the club on Friday. After playing seven years in MLS, every day, game or practice, is equally critical.

Grapevine Faith boys make it back to back
Grapevine Faith Christian captured its second consecutive TAPPS Division II state championship Saturday with a 1-0 victory over El Paso Lydia Patterson at Central Catholic High School's Bob Benson '66 Stadium. Michael Hinkley scored in the 28th minute, and goalkeeper Chapman Odom had five saves to lead the Lions in a contest played in heavy wind.
"This is the greatest feeling in the world," Hinkley said. "I just really have to thank God for pulling us through these last two games and helping us win another championship."
Hinkley's goal was set up when Dylan Ingle found Dan Hancock near the box on a free kick from around the 50-yard line. Hancock then pushed it off to Hinkley, who was just outside the box and booted it in from 20 yards out into the right side of the goal to give the Lions (15-3-3) a 1-0 lead.
The Faith defense denied Patterson's offense a single goal, even though Patterson (8-4) had six total corner kicks compared to three for the Lions. Patterson's defense was just as unyielding with goalkeeper Jose Saenz finishing with four saves. Both squads finished the game with six shots on goal.
"The wind was blowing really hard right in my face, especially in the second half, so I realized I needed to buckle down and tuck the ball in real tight," Odom said. "That's a great team we played. They had some great shots. My defense bailed me out a bunch of times."

Keller and Coppell battle to an entertaining draw
The two top boys squads in District 6-5A squared off on Friday night as Keller visited Coppell. Coppell had their perfect 16-0-0 record on the line.
Keller opened with a very conservative formation with a back four and two holding midfielders and a single forward. It was clear their goal was to stifle the Coppell offense and muddle up the midfield. The tactics worked as Coppell had a difficult time establishing much possession.
The best chance of the opening half fell to Coppell in the 31st minute. Chris Madden fired a low shot headed for the corner of the net but Keller keeper Richard Mayse dove to make the one handed save.
The second half saw the match open up a bit as Coppell began to throw more players into the attack. It allowed Keller some opportunities to counter and both sides were up and down the field.
There were very few chances from the run of play though. The best chances for both sides seemed to come from set pieces. Long throw ins and long free kicks. Coppell began to push the game in the 70th minute and put Keller under pressure for a long stretch.
Coppell looked to have found the winning goal as Reza Askari put a shot on goal from close range, but again Richard Mayse made the save. The rebound fell right in front of goal though where it was fired at the empty net. Keller's Connor Yancey flung himself in the way and blocked the ball on the goal line keeping the game tied.
Keller had a chance of their own minutes later, but Andrew Monaghan saw his header glance just wide. The match ended 0-0 and Coppell sees their spotless record tarnished a bit. The draw left the standings unchanged with Coppell and Keller tied in first place in District 6-5A. The two team's hold at the top tightened as well as Denton Guyer were upset by Fossil Ridge.

Fort Worth Nolan at home at State Tourney
Fort Worth Nolan Catholic feels at home at the TAPPS state tournament. The boys team won a state championship last year and has eight total titles while the girls have played in the state final for a whopping eleven straight years.
This year is no different. The boys are set to play San Antonio Antonian in the Division I state semifinals, and the girls will play Houston St. Agnes in their Division I semifinals. Both games are today in San Antonio.
"This year is a little different because we have ten underclassmen, but we are playing our best soccer right now," girls coach Todd Fitzgerald said. "At this point in the season, that's what you want."
But Dallas Ursuline is waiting in the other side of the girls bracket. Ursuline, which will play Dallas Bishop Lynch, has won 21 straight TAPPS state titles -- many against Nolan (13-7-7).
" Ursuline is always a solid team," Fitzgerald said. "But in the playoffs, everyone has a clean slate. We feel like we are clicking right now, and that's all we can ask for."
The Nolan boys team (16-2-2) is trying to advance to play for a second straight championship against either Plano John Paul II or Dallas Bishop Lynch.
"Antonian comes from a good district with strong teams this year," boys coach Adam Clementson said of Nolan's semifinal matchup. "We have great team chemistry. The boys work really hard together. They believe in what we are doing and are focused on getting another championship."
