Setup

Using a full size training goal, place a goalkeeper in the goal.

Assign your midfielders, flanks and outside backs as servers on the right and left side of the penalty area. With the remaining players create 3 additional lines in the middle of the field for the finishers who crash the box once the serve is prepped and ready to be served.

Instructions

On the coach’s command, the right flank player dribbles to the end line and sends in a cross between 6 and 12 yards from goal. The players in the 3 finishing lines make curved runs and attack the near post, middle, and far post and attempt to finish on goal as quickly as possible. If a shot is not taken quick enough or the ball is received with their back facing the goal, a ball should be played to the center line for a first time shot on goal.

Variations

Add defensive players as passive defenders. Add pressure as the players get comfortable with the passive defenders.

Coaching Points

Make sure the server dribbles to the end line with speed, preps the ball towards the middle of the field to alert the attackers of the cross coming, and get hips turned towards goal before serving.

Make sure the attacking finishers make curved runs to their spots and that their runs are timed to get to the 6-12 yard area as the ball is arriving.

Quick finish with one touch volley, header, or quick turn/shot.

Soccer shielding is an important dribbling technique often used to keep possession in tight spaces. Shielding occurs when the player in possession of the ball positions themselves between the ball and their opponent creating a barrier with their body. The player simply uses their body as a shield to keep distance between the ball and the defender.

Effective Soccer Shielding Skills

To perfect shielding in soccer the player in possession of the ball should turn their body somewhat sideways to the defender with their knees slightly bent. Both of the player’s arms should be up and away from their body bent at the elbows. The arm closest to the defender will be used to hold off the defender (shield the defender) while the other arm is used for balance. The hands should also be used to feel the defender and can somewhat be used to manipulate the defender’s position. The shielding player’s head should be up at a position where they can see the defender and the ball; however, if they can feel the ball with their touch rather than looking at it they will be more effective. With a wide stance the ball should be held with the outside foot at the farthest distance from the defender, but close enough to maneuver quickly. The player shielding the ball should be able to move the ball with the soul of the foot, top of the foot, as well as the inside and outsides of both feet. Lastly, the shielding player should be able to quickly pivot and push or pull the ball into space farthest from the defender.
It is crucial for defensive players to clear balls from the back, midfielders to win critical battles in the middle of the field, and attackers to nod a ball past the opposing keeper to score a goal.

This is not as important of a skill for players under 8 years old since the ball rarely lifts off the ground, however, it has proven to be an important skill once the players reach 9 or 10 years old.

Technique for properly heading a ball:

Contact with the ball should be made on the forehead between the eyebrows and the hairline.

Ball must be struck and not bounce off the head

Players must use muscles in their back and stomach to approach the ball

Back slightly arched as ball approaches, slightly leaning forward after striking the ball

Neck must be stiff, younger players can be taught to tuck their chin towards their chest to stiffen the neck

Head moves toward the ball

Eyes must remain open and on the approaching ball

Timing is essential

For balance, knees must be slightly bent
